Lift ‘veil of secrecy’ over plans by Marshall’s to move out of Cambridge, says Unite
- Thursday 29 August 2019
Unite, Britain and Ireland’s largest union, today (Thursday 29 August) called on the Marshall Group, one of Cambridge’s biggest employers, to lift ‘the veil of secrecy’ over its plans to move out of the city by 2030.
Unite, which has 900 highly skilled engineering members at the Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group, said it was crucial that the union was involved in the plans that affect not only the workforce, but the regional economy generally.
Unite said it had not heard from the company officially since 11 June and called on the management to convene monthly forums so that the shop stewards could be kept abreast of developments and question executives.
Unite regional officer Roger Dillon said: “We are calling for the veil of secrecy that has descended over the company’s plans since it was announced in May that it was leaving its present Newmarket Road site to make way for extensive housing development to be lifted.
“Even though the move is not due to 2030, there are obvious worries for the workforce as to what the future holds and how it will impact on their jobs. We are talking about highly skilled engineering jobs that are part of the lifeblood of the current booming Cambridge economy.
“We have not heard from the company since we had a meeting on 11 June, nearly three months ago, and it is high time that there was a free flowing and constructive dialogue between the management and Unite.
“We are calling for regular monthly forums so we can be updated on the company’s thinking as to where it may be moving its operations to.
“We appreciate the need for more housing in the Cambridge area, especially affordable housing, but a balance has to be struck with the need to preserve such key engineering jobs that are essential for the city’s economic well-being in the decades to come.”
The Marshall Group is one of the UK’s top privately owned family businesses with a history in Cambridge stretching back to 1909.
