All three candidates in the Welsh Labour leadership election were interviewed by Unite delegates at a Unite Hustings this afternoon. Mark Drakeford, Vaughan Gething and Eluned Morgan all set out their visions for Wales and were asked about how their leadership would deliver upon the policies and priorities of Unite the union. Following careful consideration Unite's Welsh Political Committee overwhelmingly decided to support Mark Drakeford in the forthcoming leadership election.

Peter Hughes, Unite Wales Regional Secretary said:

“Unite delegates were impressed by all three candidates but were of the strong view that Mark's vision for Wales was the most closely aligned to Unites priorities. Mark's socialist vision for Wales with a Welsh Labour Government working in concert with a future UK Labour Government led by Jeremy Corbyn resonated very strongly with Unite delegates.

"Mark clearly displayed a profound understanding of the concerns and worries facing ordinary working people in our country, he also made it clear that he sees the trade union movement as a central force for good in Welsh society. In terms of Brexit, Mark outlined his determination to ensure that a Welsh Government led by him would do everything in its power to support our manufacturing sector from the threats posed to it by Brexit. He said he would leave no stone unturned in the defence of our members' jobs.

"Delegates clearly felt that Mark displayed the strongest leadership qualities and agreed that he was the most experienced and qualified person to lead Wales during these uncertain times. Perhaps what impressed our delegates the most was the depth and range of new and radical ideas he articulated. He set out a strong socialist agenda for our country, that if he was elected, would ensure Wales and its citizens thrive in the years ahead”.
