About 1,900 workers at energy giant SSE, members of Unite, the country’s largest union, have voted to accept a one-year three per cent pay deal from 1 April and a new method to reward career progression.

Unite members voted overwhelmingly to accept the company’s pay offer which will mean a three per cent consolidated pay rise, with the lower paid receiving a 3.6 per cent increase. The deal runs from 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019.

Unite acting national officer for energy Peter McIntosh said: “This is a good deal for members and not only does it give members a fair pay rise at a challenging time for the UK economy, it also spells the end of performance related pay (PRP) within the company.

“This was a system that failed to deliver for our members since it was seen as divisive and benefited certain favoured ‘blue-eyed’ colleagues.

“PRP will be replaced by a much fairer system based on skills and competency which will be jointly developed with the unions.

“I would challenge all other energy and utility companies to follow suit and end PRP schemes which should be consigned to history and instead formulate together a model that delivers real benefits to their employees.”
