Suffolk ‘Scrooge’ print firm faces 24 hour strike tomorrow over two year pay freeze offer
- Wednesday 19 December 2018
Print workers in Suffolk will strike for 24 hours tomorrow (Thursday 20 December) in a pay dispute at CPI William Clowes, whose bosses have given them two pay rises in the last 14 years.
Workers at the Beccles company, members of Unite, will be on the picket line at the Copland Way site from 05.30 tomorrow in their dispute over the company’s ‘Scrooge’ offer of a two-year pay freeze from April 2018.
Unite, Britain’s and Ireland’s largest union, has 75 members out of an estimated workforce of 110. They are already operating an overtime ban.
Unite regional officer Mark Walker said: “Scrooge has definitely set up home in the Suffolk countryside with the bosses at CPI William Clowes making an insulting offer of a two-year pay freeze from April 2018 to a highly skilled and dedicated workforce.
“It is hard to believe, but the workers have only had two pay rises in the last 14 years. There was one per cent in 2017 and the previous one was about a decade ago. It is a disgrace.
“The Beccles operation is part of the profitable CPI Group UK and the management could well afford to show some Christmas pay cheer this year, otherwise this dispute, with all reputational damage to the company, will continue into the new year.
“Unite’s door is open for constructive talks 24/7 in the run-up to the Christmas holiday.”
The workers voted by 71 per cent for strike action and by 87 per cent for industrial action short of a strike. They staged a one day strike in November and have two more 24 hour strikes planned for 17 January and 13 February.
