Get set for the 150th anniversarry gala in 2021. DMA secretary Alan Mardghum promised: “We will make sure that we make up for this year’s cancellation by staging the biggest and the best gala ever seen to celebrate its 150th year. The Big Meeting, as it is known, has a central place in the culture and history of the people and mining of County Durham. More and more people come each year despite the last colliery having closed in 1993. We will continue to organise this most spectacular and important event. We will not see it fade.”

Cancelled - Durham Miners Gala Durham
Held on the second Saturday of July the Durham Miners Gala sees trade unionists from across the country descend on Durham city and the event has developed into the largest gathering of trade unionists in the country. Highlights include wave after wave of banners, each typically accompanied by a brass band, which are marched to the old Racecourse, where political speeches are delivered. In the afternoon a miners' service is also held in Durham Cathedral which may include the blessing of any new banners.
