Help us Drop the Debt!

Scottish local government is spending the equivalent of 44p in every £1 of council tax collected from Scottish residents on servicing debt liabilities – Unite estimates that 10p of this in every pound derives from outstanding pre-devolution liabilities.

Unite is calling for an amnesty on all pre-devolution council debts owed to the UK Treasury.

There is precedence for this action. In 2001 the UK Treasury offered to write-off the housing debt accrued by councils if they transferred their homes into housing associations.

An amnesty would create much-needed breathing space in extremely pressurised Scottish local government revenue budgets, potentially saving hundreds of millions of pounds and thousands of jobs.
