Unite Criminal Justice Managers
Welcome
Unite Criminal Justice Managers has its history in representing
the middle and senior managers in the Probation Service. Formed in
1980 as the Probation Managers' Association, it provides
professional support and advice for members who hold management
posts within the criminal justice system. It recognised the changes
in legislation which brought in service providers from the private
and voluntary sectors, and in December 2011 amended its
constitution and changed its title in order to bring benefits of
membership to managers in those sectors while continuing its
provision of service to those within the National Probation
Service. It has close links with the Ministry of Justice, the
National Probation Directorate and the Probation Boards'
Association. Its views are regularly sought throughout the criminal
justice system and it is represented on a number of influential
bodies.
As an autonomous branch of Unite the union, UCLM has its own
constitution and national executive committee. Contact with members
is maintained through a network of regional representatives, and a
news bulletin is published several times a year. The national
executive provides a rapid response to member enquiries, and
support in representing them on occasions when difficulties arise
in the workplace. As a branch of Unite it is able to draw upon the
expertise and resources of the largest trade union in the UK.
UCJM affirms and promotes the crucial role of managers in the
criminal justice system and their skills in effectively managing
service delivery, innovation and change. Alongside these, it is
also concerned to ensure that the management skills of its members
are appropriately recognised, developed and protected in the often
hostile work environment which demends constantly high standards of
performance from finite resources.
