Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS)
Defend Public Sector Pensions - VOTE
YES!
The government is bringing forward a
series of proposals which threaten to greatly reduce the pension
benefits and increase their cost to members working in the public
services.
Unite has tried to negotiate a fair
settlement with the government but the government refuses to
hear workers' concerns.
Unite is now balloting members ahead of
the 30th November Day of Action. Please visit campaign page by
clicking here. You can download campaign
materials, read the truth about public sector pensions and read why
other Unite members are voting YES.
You can calculate how the proposed
changes will affect you by clicking here.

Unite the Union members at Preston City Council, who carry out repairs and maintenance on ex-council houses, have voted to proceed with an industrial action ballot to defend their pensions. Around 100 workers are transferring over from Preston Council to Jackson Lloyd, a building maintenance firm, next week (Tuesday, 1st April). Jackson Lloyd has been awarded the contract to repair and maintain ex-council homes which are now managed by Community Gateway Association (CGA) and have offered an inferior pension scheme. Unite says that members are so angry that they are prepared to consider strike action once they transfer over to Jackson Lloyd.

We have been waiting for this consultation for some considerable time and we should take maximum opportunity of putting our views to the Department which will need to be reported back to them by 10 April 2008. Whilst this seems to be some time away, your input would be valuable in order that Bryan Freake, our National Pensions Officer can draft a response, which can then be circulated for further comment.

This LGPS Guide relates to employees transferring under a best value outsourcing process either from a local authority or as a result of a retender of such a contract. Some provisions also extend to new employees who are employed to work on the relevant contract. Where employees are subsequently transferred to a sub-contractor it remains the primary contractor who is responsible for ensuring members’ employment terms comply with these statutory requirements. The guidance outlines the issues that face Amicus Section of Unite in these situations and lists some guidelines for Amicus section of Unite officials faced with this scenario.
