North Somerset Local Safeguarding
Children’s Board case review
North Somerset Local Safeguarding Children’s
Board serious case review about a primary school teacher, finds
that there was not a pattern of children presenting to health
services, but nonetheless school nurses and others involved in
safeguarding are advised to read the entire document in context in
order to improve good practice. Points highlighted for nurses
are:
- A single set of health records per
patient from birth to death would facilitate information sharing,
as recommended in the Laming report 2003. However, at the very
least, all referrals should be copied in to GPs who are
‘gatekeepers’ for collating information about their patients.
- Systems and processes for referrals
made/received by school health nurse service should be reviewed to
identify and implement strategies that would strengthen methods of
collation, retrieval and audit. This could then be used to identify
any emerging patterns and allow comparison of referral trends
across matched year groups. This should be undertaken by the lead
for School Health Nursing/Named Nurse for Safeguarding
Children.
- In this Trust, the enuresis service is
provided by the adult Bladder and Bowel service. Therefore all
these staff need to be trained to recognise child protection
issues. Communication pathways between this service and the school
health service must be improved so that all practitioners are aware
of all relevant information relating to children that are referred
and reviewed. This should be undertaken by School Health Nurse Lead
/ Bladder and Bowel Service Manager.
- Multi-agency training essential for all with
recognition that individual practitioners may hold seemingly small
and irrelevant pieces of information whose significance is only
appreciated when information is shared.
- All schools have a named safe person for
children to talk to about any concerns (not their teacher or head
teacher)

Policy background for School
Nursing
We have published a policy background for school nursing in the
United Kingdom to keep members up to date with guidance which
influences their practice. By definition this will need regular
updating, so please contact me with comments and suggestions;

The Princes’ Trust
The Princes’ Trust has published the 4th Youth index
2012 which tracks the wellbeing of 16-25 year olds using a
representative sample. There is an overall improvement in happiness
and confidence among young people. However it finds a link between
disorganised lifestyles and low academic attainment and that those
not in education, employment or training (NEETS), are significantly
more pessimistic and unhappy.

Advice for People
interested in becoming a School Nurse
Launch of new web-page for
patient/public versions of NICE guidance
There
is a new page on NICE’s website
- http://www.nice.org.uk/patientsandpublic.
This page allows the user to access all of NICE guidance written
for patients, carers and the public from one dedicated site.
The site gives you the opportunity to search for the
patient/public versions of our guidance by keyword, by health care
topic, or by date. In addition, by clicking ‘show all’ you
can access all of the clinical ‘understanding NICE guidance’
documents and all of the public health quick reference
guides. The page also gives the user the option to see other
versions of the guidance if they wish, and links back to
information on how patients, carers and members of the public can
get involved with NICE’s work.
CWDC has launched a microsite
for Integrated Working
http://www.cwdcouncil.org.uk/alltogetherbetter
The new site explains the principles of Integrated Working and
provides a range of FREE tools and guidance, including:
- Common assessment framework - a process that enables
practitioners and volunteers to identify each child's needs, and
who is best placed to deliver support and develop a tailored action
plan to meet those needs.
- Guidance for the lead professional / practitioner - the person
who co-ordinates all activity and becomes a single point of contact
for everyone involved, especially the child or young person.
- Guidance on information sharing - practical advice and guidance
on appropriate ways to share information.
- Induction Workbook and training materials to introduce
practitioners and volunteers to integrated working.
