Health sector in the eastern region

In the eastern region, most Unite officers have NHS responsibilities and there is also a significant Medical Research Council membership as another part of the health sector.

The National Blood Service (NBS) HQ is at Watford and the Bio Products Laboratory at Elstree, together with its sister establishment in the US, is a prime component of the NBS.

The Strategic Health Authority covering the East of England is based in Cambridge and the union is represented on the various joint bodies. The regional health sector committee actively monitors activity and developments.

Partnership working with the employer is evolving at difference pace within the region, made more complex by the geography, the lack of a conurbation and the population flows of commuter land, which impact heavily upon the region.

The region holds training days and seminars to compliment national provision. It has a developing e-mail network which grows with the roll out of IT across the NHS.

Unite membership within the region increases year on year in real and relative terms. New groups are regularly being formed, commonly to bring together occupations or professions, amongst the latest being trust manager groups, because of the impact of Agenda for Change upon such staff.

The financial challenges facing the NHS in the East of England mean the union faces battles to defend local services and make the NHS accessible to all, including arguing for those in rural locations which are located away from major urban hospitals.
