Unite members in strike ballot at Iggesund, Workington
9th November 2009
Unite members working at the Iggesund paper board mill in
Workington, Cumbria are to be balloted for strike action following
the company's refusal to abide by the industry's dispute procedure
as agreed by Unite and the Confederation of Paper Industries.
Tony Burke, Unite assistant general secretary, said: “The
industry dispute procedures provide for a meeting to take place at
national level before dispute action. We have asked the company to
abide by industry procedures and that a meeting takes place with
national officer, Peter Ellis. However, the company has flatly
refused to honour the industry dispute procedure and therefore, we
have no alternative but to ballot our members for strike
action.
“We have written to the Confederation of Paper Industries,
requesting them to intervene as provided under national
procedures.”
