Strike at Aberdeenshire paper mill as talks break
down
Wednesday 22nd March 2006
More than 200 Amicus members working at Inverurie
Paper mill in Aberdeenshire are to strike tomorrow (Thursday 23rd
Match) over company proposals that will reduce workers potential
earnings.
The strike is to go ahead after talks to resolve the pay
dispute failed.
Amicus Branch Official, Willie Wallace, who represents
employees at the paper mill, owned by the US giant, International
Paper, said:
"Talks broke down yesterday after the management
put forward a deal we had already rejected. Our offer was again
rejected and the strike action will go ahead as planned. There has
to be an increase in the hourly rate if there is any chance of
reaching an agreement."
Amicus Assistant General Secretary, Tony Burke, said:
"The company don't seem to want to settle the
issue. They have taken the workforce for granted for too long and
expect them to accept a pay freezes.
"The company have failed to try and find a constructive way
forward and have refused to meet with us with ACAS present.
Consequently the action will start and will escalate if needs be.
Our officials and union stewards want to resolve this but the
company don't seem to want to."
Amicus has reached reasonable settlement for employees in the
papermaking industry across in the
UK.
Amicus members voted earlier this month four to one in favour
of a strike action.
