Amicus comment on Perfecseal, Derry Northern
Ireland
Friday, 9th June 2006
Commenting on the dismissal of over 100 workers at the Derry
packaging company, Perfecseal, Amicus Assistant General Secretary
Tony Burke said: "The original walk-out by staff at the
plant was not sanctioned by Amicus. Indeed this unofficial action
has been repudiated by our union. The company and our members are
well aware of this.
"What we have been trying to do is to resolve the
matter as quickly as possible through dialogue with the company
using the services of the Labour
Relations Agency (LRA) in
Northern Ireland.
"Despite the unofficial walk-out, dismissing our
members was not a helpful act by the management and made matters
worse, particularly as our officials in North Ireland were working
hard to get a resolution to the problem."
"Talks involving the LRA are on-going and will go on
over the weekend if needs be to resolve the matter."
