Amicus "astonished" at plans for "Maxwell the Movie"

Thursday 29th June 2006

Amicus Assistant General Secretary Tony Burke said he was “astonished” at press reports in the UK this week for plans of an American film producer to film the life story of disgraced newspaper tycoon Robert Maxwell.

Tony Burke said: “Maxwell ripped-off the pensions of hundreds of print workers who had contributed to what they believed was a safe pension scheme, only to find that Robert Maxwell had stolen their pensions in order to prop up his businesses and acquire other companies.

“Hundreds of print workers who worked for Maxwell’s companies will be appalled at the prospect of a film being made about a man who stole their pensions.

“Many print workers lives were wrecked because of his actions and many have faced extreme hardship following the loss of their pensions through Maxwell’s actions.

“A film about Robert Maxwell’s life is bound to bring back painful memories to print workers and their families and will be extremely distressful for those print workers whose pensions he stole.”
