Unite at Prudential Section
Unite are recognised in Prudential for Grades
1 – 3 in London and Reading. We have been recognised for 38
years and Prudential Section forms a key part of the history of the
finance sector within the union.
In 1970 Baroness Muriel Turner, persuaded the
Prudential Staff Associations to transfer into the ASTMS
union. She was able to get the agreement of the Executive of
the ASTMS at that time to change its rules to allow finance sector
workers into the union to allow for the transfer of the Prudential
members.
Following that change ASTMS targeted other
finance companies for organisation and the finance sector began to
grow. Then ASTMS merged with TASS to form MSF, which then
merged with AEEU to form Amicus, which then merged with Unifi, to
bring in bank union members, and finally Amicus merged with T&G
to form Unite. The finance sector remains the largest sector
within Unite and it all started with Prudential and the work done
by Baroness Turner in 1970.
