  • 14th September 2011 - IMPORTANT BULLETIN TO ELECTRICAL, PLUMBING & MECHANICAL MEMBERS: Workers in the eight breakaway companies have been given a stark choice, either agree to sign new contracts on much worse pay and terms and conditions or face the sack on December 7 and be re-engaged on the reduced terms and conditions. Unite's advice to you is: DON'T SIGN. If your employer pulls you in for a one to one don't be bullied and don't sign a new contract. It's vital that individuals don't sign up and that we fight this attack collectively. CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION AND GUIDANCE

  • 17th August 2011 - An extremely well attended meeting of the Unite Shop Stewards Forum representing Electrical, Plumbing & Mechanical workers took place today (Wednesday 17th August 2011) in Leeds. Shop stewards from all corners of the UK attended the Forum in relation to the Employers' proposed Building Services Engineering National Agreement consisting of eight Major contractors who seek to impose this new agreement on their employees. The Stewards sent a clear message that our membership throughout the UK are not prepared to accept the termination of their existing national agreements and the imposition of new terms and conditions of employment. Together in solidarity and as a united team the Stewards and our membership are determined to defend their agreements, craft heritage and trades. Members and shop stewards will be meeting regionally. Contact your Construction Regional Officer to get involved and obtain campaign materials and assistance in site organisation. It is imperative that we work together. As a united team we will succeed.

  • 16th August 2011 - A meeting of the NECC National Shop Stewards Forum (National Engineering Construction Committee – comprising the Unite and GMB trade unions in Engineering Construction) was held in Leeds on 15th and 16th August 2011. The shop stewards, all working under the NAECI (National Agreement for the Engineering Construction Industry), represent workers responsible for the construction, repair and maintenance of the UK’s critical infrastructure including serving the power generation, nuclear, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, process, steel,  oil and gas sectors. The Forum said:  "This NAECI National Shop Stewards Forum express our serious concerns in relation to the actions of eight major contractors and the HVCA who are seeking to potentially withdraw from the established National Agreements within the Electrical, Plumbing and Mechanical contracting sectors. We perceive that their moves amount to a unilateral and unprecedented attack on the terms, conditions, skills and apprenticeships of Unite members employed under these longstanding agreements which are allied to our industry and national agreement. We see this attack and their proposed deskilling of the workforce as the employers seeking to exploit the current economic climate. Their proposed downgrading of the skilled workforce fails to address the chronic skills gap and shortfall in apprenticeships that they have created. This Forum therefore resolves to support our M&E contracting colleagues in their fight to retain their hard won national agreements and skills."
