What the Blue Badge means

The Blue Badge is the qualification of the UK's professional, registered tourist guides. The first Blue Badges were awarded to tourist guides who were trained for the Festival of Britain in 1951. There are now around 2,000 Blue Badge guides in England and Wales over half of whom are based in London.

Blue Badge guides work in over 40 languages and in various sites and modes of transport. The Blue Badge guides training lasts eighteen months with eight rigourous written and practical examinations, this course has provided a model for guide training courses worldwide.

There are plans to establish an Institute of Tourist Guiding which will be the body that sets and upholds standards in the industry and will create a career structure that will aid the training and future development of members.
