Unite is inviting you to attend an important event for people working for Not for Profit organisations across the UK.

On 9 March 2010, Unite is holding a mass meeting in Parliament for representatives, activists and members working for Charities, Housing Associations, Professional Bodies, and other Not for Profit Organisations, large and small, to highlight the impact that funding and contracting is having on jobs and the workforce in the sector.

Our survey “Unsustainable – the impact of funding on the Not for Profit Workforce” has shown that the workforce is:

  • working excessive hours to meet contract demands
  • stressed from the pressures put on them
  • facing job insecurity because of the short term nature of the funding
  • lacking training and development opportunities
  • experiencing severe pressures created by poor contracting and cost cutting
  • and above all concerned for the well-being of service users

Rt. Hon. Angela Smith MP and Minister for the Third Sector, National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), National Association for Voluntary and Community Action (NAVCA) MPs will join Unite on 9 March 2010 to hear what is happening in your organisation.

We will be asking all Unite members to lobby their MPs in Parliament, so you can tell them about the reality of the pressures of working for Not for Profit organisations, how changes that they make to funding could really support the workforce and how the great experiment of contracting out public service to the Not for Profit Sector.

Before 9 March 2010
We need you to raise the profile of this campaign and discuss the lobby with other Unite members in your workplace. Put the poster up in your office (and order more if you need them). E-mail or send a note to all your members to get them involved. Also make sure that everyone has a sticker to where in support of Unite’s campaign.

Use the model letter to encourage your colleagues to write to their local MP. For those that are able to go to the House of Commons on 9 March 2010, there is a good opportunity to meet your MP then. Sometimes an MP isn’t available on the day, or if you cannot attend the event, then arrange to meeting with him/her in your constituency. See: “Lobbying your MP” leaflet’s section “When you meet your MP” to know what to say when you meet them. When you meet with your MP, ask them to sign the Early Day Motion (copy in this pack) and let your National Officers know that you have met your MP (by e-mailing notforprofit@unitetheunion.org).

If you are attending the Unite event on 9 March 2010 please return the attached attendance form by 1 March 2010. We need your details in advance.
