Unite 2012 policy conference
The
Unite policy conference is a body made up of Unite members who are
brought together to make the policy of the union. The
conference meets every other year and this year it is being held in
the Brighton Centre, Kings Road, Brighton, BN1 2GR on 25, 26, 27
and 28 June 2012.
The current policies of Unite are contained in the attached
policy
manual. These policies are in place until they are
specifically changed, they do not have to be agreed again at every
conference.
Agenda for conference
The agenda for the conference is made up of motions and
amendments submitted by branches and committees of the union.
The Preliminary Agenda for this year’s conference had been
published and circulated to all branches and committees along with
an invitation to submit amendments to the motions on this
preliminary agenda. Download a copy of the Preliminary
2012 Policy Conference Agenda. The deadline
for receipt of amendments is 18 May 2012.
The following guidance on submitting amendments has also been
issued.
- Each branch or committee is entitled to submit one
amendment
- An amendment cannot change the meaning of a motion
- An amendment must clearly state what motion is to be amended by
indicating the number, name and submitting body of that motion
- An amendment must clearly state where the amendment is to be
made and it must specifically state what is to be amended i.e.
where any deletions or insertions should be mad
- All amendments must be agreed at a properly convened branch or
committee meeting
- Any amendment that does not comply with this guidance could to
be ruled out of order by the Standing Orders Committee.
The letter and the form for submitting amendments are available to
download.
The deadline for receipt of amendments is Friday 18 May
2012
The Final Agenda for conference including all valid motions and
amendments will be circulated to delegates and posted on the Unite
website in advance of the policy conference.
Delegates to conference
In accordance with rule the Unite Executive Council has agreed
the distribution of delegates to this conference. Delegates will be
elected mainly by and from the Regional Industrial Sector
Committees (RISCs) and substitute delegates will be elected.
A small number of delegates are elected by some National Industrial
Sector Committees.
In addition each Region is entitled to elect additional
delegates from their Regional Committee and delegates to represent
LGBT and disabled members.
Delegates are required to attend conference from Saturday 23
June to Thursday 28 June and hotel accommodation is booked
centrally for them. Unite will write to delegates with further
information about the conference including accommodation, they
should not book accommodation direct. A crèche for the children of
delegates will be provided during conference sessions.
Young members at conference
The general secretary has decided that we should invite 100
young activists to attend the conference as observers, with full
right to participate (but not to vote) in order to open up the
conference to young members who might find it difficult to be
elected as delegates. Regions have been asked to identify young
members who can attend conference in this capacity.
Visitors to conference
Information for members and others who wish to attend as
visitors about how to register for conference and to book
