Hungarian presidency
from Jan 2011 to June 2011
Following the Belgian presidency and since the 1st day of
January 2011, the Council of Europe will be in the hands of the
Hungarians until June 2011.
Hungary joined the European Union for the first time in 2004 and
like the UK isn't in the Euro Zone. It will be its first time at
the helm of the Council of Europe.
In terms of priorities Hungary made them pretty clear:
stabilisation of the European economy, EU expansion (Croatia),
Energy (EU summit in May), integration of Roma people and carry on
working on the modification of the Lisbon treaty to make permanent
the financial stabilisation
mechanism (recently set up to help Greece and Ireland).
Quite an ambitious programme, isn’t it? Maybe that is why their
slogan is "Strong Europe with a human touch".
