Labour Party policy making in practice

As a part of the Labour Party you can help mould the party’s policies to show there are real alternatives to the ConDem cuts.

In particular as a union delegate from your branch you can bring your ideas and the hopes and concerns of your family, friends and colleagues to your local Labour Party. You can also, as a Unite member, pass your ideas and suggestions on through the union’s committees and structures to help influence the way our delegates to the National Policy Forum contribute in that forum.

The Labour Party National Policy Forum (NPF) looks at submissions from workplaces, unions, Constituency Labour Parties (CLPs) and the wider community. The NPF is the Labour Party’s policy making body, involving representatives from the unions, Labour Party members and MPs and MEPs. It reports to the Annual Conference of the Labour Party.

The Political Department will provide support to Unite members who want to influence Labour Party policy. It is vital that the experience and knowledge of ordinary trade union members is put at the centre of the Labour Party's policy development.
