A NEW training centre designed to give people the right skills
for the job, will be officially launched tomorrow (Thursday).
The new Community Learning Hub at the Eaton Electric site,
Turkey Shore Road, Holyhead, will give people vital training,
up-skilling and support – particularly those made redundant from
Anglesey Aluminium.
The centre will be open two days a week and is jointly funded by
Eaton Electric and the union Unite’s Step Up to Learning
Campaign.
The £234,000 Step Up to Learning campaign is funded by the Wales
Union Learning Fund which was established by the Welsh Assembly
Government to promote workplace learning.
Albert Owen MP, who will officially open the centre, said: "I am
pleased to support the new Community Learning Hub and pay tribute
to Unite and Eaton Electric Ltd on the initiative.
"It is vital that people are given the opportunity to gain new
skills through training courses in their local community.
"Building and maintaining the skills base is good for industry,
individuals and the local economy as we move forward.
"There is real practical help and support for people to acquire
new skills and confidence in the future.
"Unlike the recession in the early 1990s, people don’t need to
feel alone."
Andy Richards, Unite regional secretary, said: "Unite are
committed to preserving our strong skills base in Wales. To date,
this campaign has opened up many opportunities for Unite members to
develop their skills in the workplace. The establishment of this
community-based hub extends these opportunities to our members who
have recently been made redundant from sites on Anglesey, such as
Anglesey Aluminium."
David Rees , Eaton Electric aftermarket site manager, said:
"This is a tremendous opportunity to provide a local training venue
for local people to improve basic skills and up skill.
"A framework of support will be available from the training hub
and Eaton Electric Ltd is proud to be able to support this
initiative."
The Hub will host learning events, basic and essential skills
courses and support courses which provide key recognised vocational
and transferable skills.
The team will work closely with the Menter Môn’s Shaping the
Future Project, Wales TUC Learning services and the Sector Skills
councils to ensure the training support available reflects Labour
Market Information and future skills requirements.
