Stagecoach Hull – Celebration of Learning
2010
All aboard
On the 27th October 2010 Stagecoach Hull and Unite
ran a wide range of informal learning activities as part of the
Celebration of learning. The event was organised to give
those attending a positive experience of learning and hopefully
encourage them to return or continue with education in the
future.
I joined Nigel Skinner and Martyn Owst (ULRs)
at the Hull Interchange where Stagecoach had provided us with two
training buses to hold the event and permission was given to park
the buses right outside the offices and canteens of both Stagecoach
and East Yorkshire Bus co – a bit of a captive audience you might
say.
The day was a real success with nearly 100
people visiting the learning buses to talk and take part in a
variety of workshops which included: sign language, history and
heritage, heath and well being, ICT and literacy and
numeracy. Hull College was also on hand to discuss a vast
array of learning opportunities available.
Fit Fans were one of the star attractions on
the day and gave away free five a day fruit bags which were donated
by Unionlearn. The Fitfans project has been commissioned by
the Health Authority in Hull, to provide free weigh loss support
through specialist lifestyle and exercise programmes. In
direct response to their attendance at the celebration of learning
event, Fitfans are developing a new programme especially for bus
driver.
Hull History Centre also attracted a lot of
interest and has offered Stagecoach staff a free course on the
history of Hull which we are all looking forward to attending.
ICT was delivered by Jane Haigh from Unite and
Claire Bell the ‘sign language’ lady, as she has been christened by
the staff at stagecoach, signed up a number of people on the
day. Jane was promoting the new Online basics – short
bite-size courses to help people, who currently lack digital
skills, to build up the ICT skills they need to get on line.
Claire is already looking at running her first sign language course
for the staff in Hull in the New Year.
Well done and thanks must go to all the
provider who participated and a very special thanks to the ULRs and
Workplace Reps, Nigel Skinner, Martyn Owst and Keith Bilton.
Also a big thanks to Wayne Lively, Stagecoaches Training
Co-ordinator who pulled out all the stops to provide us with the
venue’s and to Tony Fieldsend the depot manager at Stagecoach Hull
for happily letting us disrupted his operation for the day!
