Sean Plank - Star of Wincanton - Focus

Sean works at Wincanton Focus at Tamworth. He has worked there for 8 years. His job title is Warehouse/hygiene operative, Sean enjoys life and would like to progress within the company. At 38 years old he would like to develop himself more. He has indicated that he would like to become a section leader within the company.

We had an open day and Sean spoke to us about his English, Sean said that he found is difficult at times to put things on paper. We invited Sean to come along to the learning centre and do an assessment.

Following this we invited Sean to get involved in a course. Also after the assessment it was suggested that he went to the local college to have a further dyslexia assessment. That assessment came back showing that Sean has dyslexia.

Sean is the life and sole of the course since starting he has become more confident to talk to others about is life and the things that he has done and more to point the places that he has been. Sean has got many hobbies and one of them is swimming, since being on the course he has, for the first time, to sort out a place on a taught session. He started these three weeks ago and is really enjoying this.

He has completed this Entry Level1 Literacy and has started on Entry Level 1 Numeracy. He is finding this more difficult but is enjoying reading. This is something that he has not done before. He is also doing his NVQ Level 2 in warehouse and distribution.

Sean would like to eventually achieve level 2 in literacy and numeracy. And be able to work a computer.

The company have been fully supportive of the whole learning journey, not only for Sean but for others. Sean’s learning takes place on a Wednesday afternoon - within company time. We have had a presentation day where Sean received learner of the year award. He along with many others in the company, union and College were very proud to be there to see Sean receive this. Seeing the look on Sean’s face makes it all worth while and this has given Sean the confidence to realise that if he puts his mind to it and works hard he can achieve his dreams.

We are now looking forward to the future with Sean, he is as full of life as ever and has told me that his parents are so proud of what he has done.

There will be no stopping Sean’s learning journey and the company are fully behind him and will help and support as much as they can.
