Putting the Train into Training. Northern Rail LAW 2010

Unite ULR, Stuart Beard, put the train into training when he brought Learning at Work Day to Northern Rail’s Newton Heath depot on the 20th of May.

Providers including Manchester Adult Education Service, Manchester College, NHS Community Health Trainers and Newton Heath library came to promote their services.

Fitness First provided free t-shirts and free 1 day passes. Northern Rail contributed 2 quarter final tickets for the Northern Rail Rugby League Cup in a raffle for attendees.

Unionlearn provided funding for a free buffet, through their Learning and Skills for All Fund and 30 Quick Reads books that were quickly snapped up.Stuart Beard and Anna Kulpa with beer goggles

Unite member, Neil Adams said, “I’m really glad that we’ve had this opportunity here today. I’ve signed up for an IT Qualification (ITQ). I’d like to thank Stuart for organising this as unless you actually have people in the workplace showing you this is available it’s easy to miss out. I’m looking forward to getting on with my course and developing myself. “

While Stuart has already been active in working with sister unions, setting up surveys and an ITQ programme the day has helped us move up a gear. 60 people attended and expressed an interest in the ITQ, Spanish and Skills for Life among many other courses. Newton Heath Library have offered 50 books to help set up a book-swap scheme. We also have plans to set up health checks onsite with the Community Health Trainers.

Stuart Beard said, “I’d like to thank everyone for their efforts: the members, providers, Unionlearn for the funding and Jav Aslam from Unite. It’s been a great day for my first event and I’m looking forward to doing it again!”
