The language of learning
Victoria
Kuzmina moved to the UK from Lithuania four years
ago with husband and two young children. With
little English she got a job as warehouse operative at Comet DHL in
Corby.
Victoria is one of an estimated near quarter of the workforce
who has English as a second language at the company. “I learned
English in my country but did not speak it so it was easy to
forget,” she explains. “But I was very happy to be offered learning
and this course involved writing, speaking and listening to
English.” Victoria’s skills are now much improved and she has got
the learning bug, going on to take an IT course though union
learning at work. Now she is hoping to take things a step
further
and enrol on courses in business and
management.
“I’m not so shy about talking to others
anymore and I can now help my children with their homework,” she
says. “I tell my friends they should be learning English too!”
