Keith Moore; Wylfa Power Station; North Wales – November 2010

Keith is an operations planner at the Wylfa nuclear power station in Cemaes Bay, Anglesey. This involves making sure that the work keeps ticking over between the team leaders on the different shifts. He covers 2 of the departments on site – Turbines and Reactors. At home he is married with interests in touring with a caravan and in technology.

He became a ULR because as part of his job he was involved in health and safety and the 'shaping the future' project at Wylfa. When he did a union Health & safety course he heard about ULRs from one of the union project workers. The aims and objectives described really struck a chord with him.Wylfa Power Station

He has been a ULR since October 2009 and did his training in Flint with the TUC. It shows the dedication of the man, this is a 150 mile round trip. Keith is still an active part of the H&S networks and is building up his ULR contacts both within his industry and geographical area.

With support from Glyn Haynes, the Unite project worker, Keith appreciates being able to focus on learning for all - from cleaners to contractors. He tells me that the main benefits he personally gets from being a ULR are – “The smiley faces and thanks from friends and colleagues taking up learning. Seeing their enthusiasm grow.” Keith told me of a group of 10 scaffolders who were novices as far as IT was concerned. After working through an arranged IT course, using equipment loaned by Union and the company, they are now all well into the world of computers.

A recent Learning Needs Analysis survey showed demand for such diverse subjects as digital photography; language learning (including Welsh); and Cycle Maintenance. Keith is looking to role this program out to other sister sites in the region in the near future along with learning agreements.

Keith has come a long way from the years back when he was a skater-boy, and broke his arm when being photographed for a national skater magazine. He likes to think he's learned a thing or two since then.
