ALBERT OWEN M.P. FORMALLY OPENS NEW COMMUNITY LEARNING HUB IN
HOLYHEAD
Working in partnership trade union Unite and the multi national
employer Eaton Electric Ltd have today (Thursday 16) officially
launched a new Community Learning Hub in Holyhead.
The Hub, which was formally opened by Albert Owen M.P., is
situated at the Eaton Electric site, Turkey Shore Road, Holyhead.
The centre aims to provide vital training, up skilling and support
particularly to the workers recently made redundant on Anglesey and
in the surrounding areas and will be open two days a week.
It is co funded by Eaton Electric and Unites ‘Step Up to
Learning’ Campaign (SUtL) and will offer a well equipped,
comfortable and accessible learning environment. The £234,000 Step
Up to Learning (SUtL) campaign is funded by the Wales Union
Learning Fund (WULF) a fund established by the Welsh Assembly to
promote workplace learning.
Working in further partnership with community Union Learning
Representatives (ULRs), local learning providers, community groups
and employers on Anglesey, the Hub will host learning events, basic
and essential skills courses and support courses that provide key
recognised vocational and transferrable skills.
The Hub will work closely with the Menter Mon ‘Shaping the
Future Project’, Wales TUC Learning services and the Sector Skills
councils to ensure that the training support available reflects
Labour Market Information (LMI) and future skills requirements.
Albert Owen M.P. said
“I am pleased to support the new Community
Learning Hub and pay tribute to Unite and Eaton Electric Ltd on the
initiative.
It is vital that people are given the
opportunity to gain new skills through training courses in their
local community. Building and maintaining the skills base is good
for industry, individuals and the local economy as we move
forward.”
Andy Richards, Unite Regional Secretary said
“Unite are committed to preserving our
strong skills base in Wales. To date, this campaign has opened up
many opportunities for Unite members to develop their skills in the
workplace. The establishment of this Community based Hub extends
these opportunities to our members who have recently been made
redundant from sites on Anglesey, such as Anglesey Aluminium’’.
David Rees Eaton Electric Aftermarket Site Manager said
‘This is a tremendous opportunity to provide a local training
venue for local people to improve basic skills and up skill. A
framework of support will be available from the training hub and
Eaton Electric Ltd is proud to be able to support this
initiative’.
