EDBRO Open day - Celebration of Learning; Oct
2010
Steve Turner along with ULRs Stephen
Halliwell, Brian Higson and Ken Lindsay organised and ran an open
day in the Edbro Union Learning Centre.
The day was for the employees of Edbro, along
with employees from other companies in the Bolton area attracted
through their ULRs and the community of the surrounding area in
Bolton.
There were a variety of organisations brought
in to keep both young and old entertained along with three local
colleges to make people aware of the learning opportunities on
offer in the area.
For the young there was a Jeepers Creepers
room where they could interact with a number of species (if brave
enough) including spiders, centipedes and lizards. There was
also a science theme with children doing a number of things
including making their own slime, which one young boy said was
going on his dads head.
For the more senior people attending there was
a stand ran by Bolton Museum which had many items from far gone
days including ration books and various gadgets.
On the learning agenda, there was plenty of
information and advice on offer from Bolton, Bury and Wigan &
Leigh Colleges. Also in the computer room, people were
encouraged to use the onlinecentres site by having a go at a game
which some managed better than others but all enjoyed.
The event was well supported throughout the
day by all with a steady flow of people coming in and enjoying the
facilities. Among the many attending it was hugely
encouraging seeing local MP Julie Hilling Bolton West come along to
listen and speak to people.
All in all the day was a great success but the
plan now is to encourage the same people to come along to the
courses that the ULRs are arranging with the local providers.
Between employees of Edbro and other companies along with the local
community there is no reason why the Edbro Union Learning Centre
can not be both a great success and of great benefit to all.
