DOOSAN BABCOCK AND UNITE THE UNION

MOVE FORWARD WITH PARTNERSHIP INITIATIVE

Unite’s Regional Learning Organisers (RLOs) in Yorkshire and Humberside have shown what can happen when there is a team effort and strong partnership working with an enthusiastic employer.

RLOs Russell Morgan and Martin Redgrave have worked with Doosan Babcock, the energy services company, for some time on the learning and skills agenda. When it became clear that the company had a need for high-quality IT training resources, Russell and Martin enlisted the help of their colleagues, David Mitchell and Sarah Mitchell, based in Unite’s Castleford Learning Centre.

The team of RLOs have since developed a successful partnership with Doosan Babcock’s HR Manager Gayle Binns and the rest of her team to deliver effective IT training to Doosan staff. The workers have benefitted from the training facilities available at the Unite Castleford Learning Centre, such as high-specification PCs and interactive white board, with an enhanced learning experience.

Gayle Binns has been impressed by the friendly, professional approach from the Centre, commenting: ‘’This is a fantastic community centre, the service provided at all levels was excellent and the support on each of the training days was second to non, it has given Doosan the opportunity to work in first class facilities with a first class professional team and see what further resources are available  going forward into 2010.’’

Gayle Binns went on to say, ‘’We will be putting forward a case to higher management to include the facilities at Castleford to improve Doosan Babcocks IT training solutions within the company and driving forward our  training strategy for 2010 in Partnership with Unite’’

Gayle is positive about the relationship with Unite and how the union’s profile has been raised through this partnership working: ‘’Each attendee came away with increased knowledge about the union / union learning and membership, which we support fully at Doosan’’

Unite believes that this learning partnership has raised the union’s profile within Doosan Babcock alongside enhancing the experience of those workers attending the IT training delivered at Castleford.
