Creating connections through learning
- Basildon Hospital LAW day 2010
Staff found out more about learning new skills
as part of National Learning at Work Day (LAW).
Members of staff from our Education and
Training Department, teamed up with South Essex College and the
Open University, and set up a stand in the main reception of
Basildon University Hospital. They had plenty of advice and
information about getting back into education and the different
courses on offer.
It is all part of the National LAW Day, which
this year aims to “Create Connections” by encouraging people to
learn from each other, to create a supportive learning culture, and
enhance everyone’s skills, understanding and knowledge.
Ray Best, who is a Technician at the Trust,
and one of our Union Learning Representatives (ULRs), said: “We
need to get the word out that learning is fun. Education is
important, especially in a changing economic climate. If we can
encourage people to train to be the best, then they can go forward
in the future, not just in their personal development, but the
development of the Trust. “
Ray knows what he is talking about. Having
left school with no qualifications he went back to college aged 35.
He said: “I left with six O-Levels, four A-Levels and a university
degree. When I was at school I never wanted to learn, but I was
lucky I got a second chance at it.
“There has been quite a lot of interest from
staff during LAW Day and I’m hoping that we will be able to do
something like this on a quarterly basis, instead of annually.”
Ray visited nearby Orsett Hospital with his
fellow ULR Mick Cartwright, a Porter, on Friday 28 May to talk to
staff there about new education opportunities.
