Airbus Learning Day - 2010
So successful was the Learning at Work Day held in Airbus
in May ULRs said they wanted another one!
One Wednesday towards the end of July,
Barbara Hale, Angela Baugh and myself joined Airbus ULRs for a
Learning Day held in the Panel Assembly Centre. This vast
working area, with wing parts being worked on constantly and
noisily was the setting for a second very successful day. So,
earplugs in we all got ready for the first shift break of the
morning!
The aim of the day was to show
employees what was on offer from their local learning
providers. The catchment area for Airbus employees is large
so, Deeside, Llandrillo and Yale Colleges came, along with Glyndwr
University, the Open University in Wales and THE Group Training
provider. The Wales TUC had a table promoting rep courses and
learning.
Employees at Airbus have a ‘Pass
Scheme’. The employer will give £100 towards the cost of a
course of the employee’s choice. Along with some funding from
Unite, this is a great incentive to get members learning!
Glyn Haynes, project officer from Unite, was very pleased to see
union led learning at the Broughton Factory get a higher profile
amongst members.
And if all that wasn’t enough to draw
in employees then Wrexham & Shropshire Railways who came along
held a competition for first class rail tickets to
London.
Lots of positive comments from
employees, “There’s a welding course just round the corner from
me.” and providers were pleased with the number of enquiries
received.
Well done and thanks must go to all
the providers who participated with a special well done to ULRs
(and H&S reps) Steve Lloyd, Keith Peat, Steve Paul, new ULR
recruit Helen Kerfoot-Lloyd and to Barry the Training
Manager. This team organised the event in a very short time
frame.
