Learning agreement at the Simon Community
Unite signed a learning agreement with the
Glasgow Simon Community in June 2009, bringing new opportunities
for staff in the voluntary sector organisation.
The Simon Community has worked with homeless
people in Glasgow for more than 40 years. Based just south of the
river Clyde in the Gorbals, the organisation supports about 3,000
people a year, with a dedicated team of staff and volunteers. The
organisation provides outreach as well as a soup kitchen to
homeless people in the street, as well as offering a safe and
stable living environment through seven accommodation projects. The
organisation also offers resettlement and housing support.
Learning coordinator Lyn Turner, who signed
the agreement for Unite, said “Unite is proud to be working with
the Simon Community and supporting staff and volunteers in the
important work they do to tackle homelessness. We believe that this
learning agreement will give staff the opportunity to advance and
learn new skills, and it reflects Unite’s commitment to the
voluntary sector and the important work it does.”
Unite is concerned about reports that the
recession has badly affected funding for many charities, and
threatens the valuable work they do.
The union is active in a number of voluntary
sector organisations, including the Church of Scotland, care
organisations and housing associations. Members in the sector who
believe their workplace could benefit from a lifelong learning
programme are encouraged to get in touch.
