Learning at Work Day takes off at Luton Airport
I was invited to attend a learning day with
Mickey Herbert at Luton airport on 08/07/2009. The day ran from 10
in the morning to 10 at night, which both Mickey and I covered for
Unite between us.
.The day was a real success and many people
visited the Unite stand, we had 40 enquiry forms back which
included IT training, Skills for Life (SfL) and digital
photography. All the staff who attended from Luton airport were
very enthusiastic, and eager to learn new skills.

Local Colleges & Learning Providers were
also present on the day. There were activities going on all around
- such as jewellery making, digital photography, language taster
sessions in Japanese, French, German and Spanish were on hand.
There was also a guy called Keith giving guitar lessons who was
extremely popular.
The event had been organised by the Abdul the
new Unite ULR at the airport. he was very keen to get learning onto
the agenda at the airport. One of the staff who attended also
became interested in becoming a ULR as well, which would be
great.

The HR Manager attended the day and was very
supportive and advised that we could hold learning days as often as
we liked. Also Roger Koukkoullis the Airfield Operations Manager
came to the event and were very keen for the learning culture to
get started at the airport. He told us how he had worked his way up
through the company from baggage handling through adult education
& learning.
Between us, we hope have another learning day
at the airport in early September so that the people who showed an
interest in learning could complete initial assessments and would
then be able to move on to undertaking their own learning.
The next steps for Luton Airport will be for
Mickey, Abdul and me to sit down and arrange to organise a day and
a timetable for making it happen for Unite members & other
workers.
