Joining the partnership

We ask that the relevant employee and employer representatives sign the following principles document to commit to working together for dignity at work.

Working Together for Dignity at Work - Partnership Principles
We express our support for the project, which is jointly funded by the Department for Trade and Industry and Amicus, and give our commitment to work together to achieve its aim.

Project Aim
To encourage employee representatives and employers to build cultures in which respect for individuals is regarded as an essential part of the conduct of all those who work in the organisation. The project will also increase awareness and knowledge of 'dignity at work' issues, and encourage the development of partnership working in the workplace through the promotion of joint working on dignity at work.

Through the partnership, we will work together to devise and promote a voluntary charter on dignity at work, which will incorporate international, and UK good practice standards. The charter will be supported by suggested policies and procedures, training and materials to support internal communications and profile raising work. We will have the opportunity to access support, share best practice and influence the materials that will be produced through participation in regional seminars and the use of a specifically designed website.

The principle of working together between employers and employees is fundamental and we will collaborate and contribute to the promotion of the project in tangible ways within our organisation. To advance the aim of this project, it is expected that employees are involved in workplaces, including through their trade unions and representation structures. By joining the Dignity at Work Partnership, we agree that we are committed to a wider dissemination of the lessons learned by the project, in the interests of the wider workplace community.

What you get by joining
Organisations joining the partnership project will receive the following:

  1. An invitation for one or more of your HR managers and union reps to attend a regional seminar on bullying and dignity at work. The seminar will look at different experiences from the UK and around the world.
  2. Involvement in developing the terms of a voluntary Dignity at Work Charter, which will be widely promoted in UK workplaces.
  3. The opportunity to participate in an initial confidential bullying survey of your employees, tailored to your organisation, to give you a valid picture of the current situation in your workplace.
  4. The survey will be analysed by researchers at Portsmouth University and you will receive the full results, free of charge, subject only to a cost limit on numbers.
  5. Training for workplace representatives and HR managers in dealing with dignity and harassment issues.
  6. Help in adopting and publicising your Dignity at Work policy in the best way for your organisation.
  7. Materials to support your profile raising work, internal communications and training of employees at whatever levels are needed in your company.
  8. Development of employee harassment councillors to offer a first base contact.
  9. Assistance in setting up an Employee Assistance Programme telephone helpline for harassment and dignity at work issues.
  10. Evaluation via employee and management opinion surveys at the end of project.

Ways to be involved

The Dignity at Work Partnership Project has started and is ongoing over the next few years and it is hoped that as many employers as possible will come on board.

At each phase partners are able to make a contribution to the project by getting involved in various ways. It is entirely up to you when and how you contribute, however the more you do, the more you will benefit. Below is an outline of the key phases of the project and how you can become involved.

The Research Phase has investigated current best practice in workplaces both in the UK. This research will inform the design of a proposed Action Pack which will include recommended policies and procedures, training guidelines and examples of materials to support internal communications and profile raising work.

Once the Action Pack has been produced and tested, we will work with partners to ensure relevant people within organisations are trained and the policies and procedures are communicated effectively to all employees.

The project has also held regional seminars in order to highlight the work that has been done and to share best practice.

Partners are invited to be as active as they wish to be. We have outlined some of the specific areas you may want to be involved in, however you can simply implement the Action Pack when it has been tried and tested.
