Education

Message from the Regional Secretary

Dear Member

The Union has long prided itself on the quality of the education service it provides. The role of the Shop Steward and Lay Representative is demanding enough, but we know that without the appropriate training and support that the job is made so much harder. That is why I would actively encourage all Lay Representatives to take advantage of the education courses that the Union provides.

The courses are run in relaxed and informal ways, far removed from the classroom style learning of old, and are aimed at giving you the skills to be confident in representing our members' interests in the workplace. Often, the greatest lessons are learnt from other Lay Representatives like yourself.

it is also important that if you have been on the union courses in the past that you update your skills and keep in touch with numerous changes in employment legislation, equal opportunities or developments in the bargaining agenda. Increasingly the union is looking to develop the trianing debate with employers.

The development of learning representatives coupled with the government's commitment to life-long learning means that there has never been a better time to return to learning and I would encourage you all to enrol. Having been on the union's education courses myself, I can only say that you won't know what you've been missing until you've tried it, so make sure that you sign up today and participate in the union's excellent education service.

In solidarity

Laurence Faircloth
