Pension rally at Labour
Party Conference
Amicus members are demonstrating for pensions justice at this
year’s Labour Party Conference in Manchester on Tuesday
26th September.
Please join us for a show of strength. The march will assemble
at 11.30 a.m. at Castlefield, Manchester (off Liverpool Road) and
walk across Deansgate towards Lower Mosley Street leading to a
rally opposite the GMEX Conference Centre. The demonstration
is due to finish at 1.30 pm.
Amicus members employed at Remploy factories across the
country joined hundreds of protestors in Liverpool on Saturday
2nd September to try to save their jobs following a
government sponsored review to look at ways to cut costs.
Remploy is the UK’s biggest employer of disabled people with
over 5,000 disabled workers in 82 factories nationally, including
Aintree, Birkenhead and St. Helens. Speakers at the protest
included Amicus’ Deputy General Secretary and North West Regional
Secretary, Graham Goddard, and Amicus National Officer, GMP Sector,
Anne Field. Pictures from the demo can be found on our
website at:

Amicus' Deputy General Secretary, Graham Goddard, said:
“Remploy provides crucial employment for both disabled
and non disabled workers nationally. These plans to cut jobs
will have a devastating effect on all workers across the factory
network. We have been actively campaigning, with colleagues
across the country, to fight factory closures and job
losses.
“Amicus is calling on Remploy to listen to the joint
unions’ proposals which will protect Remploy’s workers from
compulsory redundancy and keep more disabled people in
work.”
Joint unions campaigning to stop Remploy factories from
closure are organising two Fringe Meeting’s at this year’s Labour
Party Conference on September
26th.
The meetings are being held at Palace 7, Palace Hotel, Oxford
Road, Manchester M60 7HA from 1.00 – 2.00 p.m. and at Peterloo
Room, Manchester Mechanics Institute from 6.30 p.m. to 8.00
p.m. If you are interested in attending the Fringe meetings
please contact Paul Finnegan at the Amicus Prestwich Office on 0161
798 8976.
Lifelong Learning in
the Finance Sector
Amicus in partnership with Union Learn are organising a
Lifelong Learning event to look at higher level skills gaps and
learning opportunities in the Finance Sector.
The Conference is being held on Friday 13
October at Haigh Hall Country Park, Haigh, Wigan
commencing at 9.30 a.m. There will be a range of speakers and
workshops on key issues such as developing young employees and high
level qualifications for the sector.
The aim of the event is to look at skills development and
opportunity for employees and how these can have a positive impact
on organisations and individuals. It will also look at how
partnership working with union and management involvement can help
to develop a learning culture within an organisation. We are,
therefore, encouraging union representatives to bring along
colleagues from their HR or Training Department which will provide
an excellent opportunity to raise the profile of learning in the
workplace.
For further details on the Conference please contact Helen
Osgood, Kate Oultram or Javaid Aslam at the Prestwich Office on
0161 7988976.
Amicus kick starts a
recruitment drive at Lex
Amicus kick started a recruitment drive this month at Lex, a
vehicle leasing company owned by HBOS, by recruiting 48 new members
including the potential of 3 new Amicus reps.
Amicus officials and representatives had the opportunity to
walk around the site in Cheadle and speak to its 700 employees
about the benefits of joining Amicus. Existing and new members who
signed up throughout the week were entered into a free trade draw
and Kathryn Wood a newly recruited member was the lucky winner of
two tickets to see Kylie in concert at Manchester. A picture from
the event can be found on our website at
http://www.amicustheunion.org/Default.aspx?page=3978.
Amicus supports Princes
Park Festival
Amicus sponsored this year's Princes Park Event in Liverpool.
This year marked the second stage of the journey during the
Transatlantic Slave Trade, focusing on Maafa - a Kiswahili
(Swahili) term for "Disaster" or "Terrible Occurrence".
An Amicus sponsored stall offered us the opportunity to engage
with local people in the community and with a carnival parade
proceeding through local streets, in the Granby Toxteth area
Liverpool 8 leading into Princes Park, the event attracted
thousands of people and was a brilliant place to get valuable
feedback.
North West Officer, Gary Owen, is running the Great North Run
on Sunday 1 October in aid of MedEquip4Kids a NW regional charity
that "helps children in and out of hospital."
