Keep Liverpool Daily Post & Echo printed on
Merseyside
Unite members at the Liverpool Echo and Daily Post are fighting
to save their jobs after Trinity Mirror announced plans to close
its printing presses in Liverpool ending over 150 years of
newspaper printing in the city.
Around 100 jobs are threatened as Trinity Mirror plans to
transfer production of its North West newspaper tittles, which
include the Liverpool Echo and Liverpool Daily Post, to its Trinity
Mirror site in Oldham, Manchester.
Members at the site have started a petition and are calling for
support from the government, local MPs and the wider public across
Merseyside.

Local MPs urged to unite to keep Liverpool Post and Echo printed on
Merseyside
Unite members at the Liverpool Post and Echo are taking their
fight to Parliament tomorrow (Tuesday 14th October) to stop Trinity
Mirror moving the printing of its North West local papers out of
Merseyside.
Workers at the Liverpool Post and Echo are fighting to save
their jobs after Trinity Mirror announced plans to shift the
printing of its North West regional newspapers titles to Oldham,
Manchester.
Union members from the plant will be making representation to
local MPs, Louise Ellman, Joe Benton, Claire Curtis Thomas, George
Howarth, Eddie O’Hara, Maria Eagle, Peter Kilfoyle, Jane Kennedy,
Robert Wareing, Dave Watts, Shaun Woodward, Angela Eagle, Helen
Jones, Helen Southworth, Mike Hall, Ben Chapman and Stephen Hesford
in Westminster in a bid to keep production of the Liverpool Post
and Echo on Merseyside and its’ 101 skilled printing jobs.
Unite say the proposed closure of the site will have a devastating
effect on its loyal workers and the local economy if Trinity
Mirror’s plans to move the printing of its local titles including
Liverpool Echo, Liverpool Daily Post, Metro, KOP Monthly,
Birkenhead, West Wirral, Midweek Visiter, Formby Times, South
Liverpool Merseymart, Anfield & Walton Star, Ormskirk
Advertiser, Crosby Herald, Maghull & Anfield Star and the
Southport Visiter out of the city go ahead.
Unite Regional Officer, Paul Finegan said: "We need as
many MPs as possible to voice their support to keep these jobs and
newspapers printed in the city.
"We’ve been out and about in Liverpool City centre to drum up
support for the Liverpool print site and to find out what it means
to the people of Merseyside. Most of the public were shocked
by what is happening; they didn’t know what was going on and they
weren’t happy. Some people have mentioned doing a boycott of the
Liverpool Echo. We see that as a last resort but they have
threatened it – others will not be buying it ever again. I
don’t think Trinity Mirror realises how much this means to the
people of Merseyside.
"We urge Trinity Mirror at the highest level to reconsider its
position and keep the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo printed on
Merseyside."
Unite has launched a campaign petition to "Keep Liverpool Post
& Echo printed on Merseyside" and is calling on the people of
Merseyside and local MPs to back it. To sign the
