Wapping – 25th anniversary exhibition – returns to London

29 September 2011

The Wapping 25th anniversary exhibition - given extra impetus by this summer’s phone hacking scandal that engulfed the Murdoch media empire - returns to London this weekend.

The exhibition, highlighting the 13-month struggle that the employees staged in 1986 to save their jobs and protect trade union rights, will be on show at the New Academic Building, Goldsmiths, University of London, Lewisham Way, London SE14 from 1 October until 14 October.

The Goldsmiths exhibition is open between 9am -9pm, Monday/Friday, and 10am - 5pm Saturday/Sunday.

Wapping - one of the key industrial disputes of the Thatcher era - erupted when 5,550 production and clerical workers were sacked by Rupert Murdoch overnight.

It was in January 1986 that News International – owners of The Times, Sunday Times, The Sun and the now defunct News of the World – sacked thousands of its staff when it moved its operations to Wapping in East London.

Dramatic images, photographs and accounts of the dispute - when Rupert Murdoch used his vast wealth, aided by the Conservatives’ anti-union legislation to facilitate the dash to Wapping - will be on display.

The multi-media exhibition has been organised by Unite, the National Union of Journalists, Campaign for Press and Broadcasting Freedom and the Marx Memorial Library. The display is on a nationwide tour continuing into the New Year.
