UNITE SECURES STAY ON AVIVA REDUNDANCIES

The UNITE trade union and management at Aviva have today agreed that there will be no redundancy notices served to any staff in Ireland until the final outline of the proposed company restructuring is clear.
UNITE can now begin the task of analysing each of the job losses proposed by Aviva management in the restructuring of its Irish operation.
News of the loss of a potential 950 jobs from Ireland, as well as an additional 300 to be outsourced broke last month. The company advised staff today of where the proposed job losses will be.
“Today’s briefing of staff means devastation for those whose jobs are now known to be under threat,” said UNITE Regional Officer Brian Gallagher.
“UNITE has said from the outset that we would question the analysis behind the movement of these jobs and seek to maintain the maximum number of long term sustainable jobs in Ireland.”
“The process of analysis, engagement and negotiation can now commence, fully six months after the rumours began to swirl around the company.”
“We have secured agreement today that no notice of redundancy will be served on any staff until the final outline of the proposed company restructuring is clear.”
“This will give some clarity for staff who had feared the loss of their job before Christmas.
“Unite has consistently stated that its priority is to ensure that those who wish to remain with Aviva can do so and those who want to leave will be given fair and generous terms, reflecting the continued profitability of the company and stated commitment to Ireland.
UNITE members voted over 90 per cent in favour of taking escalating industrial action to prevent the movement of jobs ahead of agreement with the company.
