UNITE CONDEMNS ‘ANTI JOBS’ BUDGET
- Reduction in spending will destroy 15,000
jobs
Today’s first half of the 2012 budget will
take at least 15,000 potential jobs out of the Irish economy,
according to the UNITE trade union.
“Enda Kenny mentioned jobs and job creation 17
times in his address to the nation last night,” said UNITE National
Co-Ordinator Walter Cullen. “Today his government has taken
away the hope that thousands of people might have had of working in
Ireland next year.
“In 2012 alone we will forego 7,500 direct
jobs through the reduction of the capital spending programme.”
“The reduction of another 6 ,000 public sector
employees, while asking those left behind to work harder for less
money, will also take away hopes of growth.”
“This alone will reduce GDP by € 400 million and consumer
demand by € 300 million.”
“Jobs will be lost across the economy and the
reduction in the deficit will be less than one tenth of one per
cent.”
“Killing growth and consumer demand will
impact on retailers and businesses with a subsequent knock on
impact on employment.”
“Everybody recognises that job creation is the
only way to grow our way out of the current economic
quicksand.”
“This government says it is central to all
their plans yet everything they do is in direct conflict with the
need to get people back to work.”
