Unite members at EBS may defer Thursday strike if
company agrees to talks at LRC
An agreement to talks at the Labour Relations Commission may
lead to a deferral of Thursday’s planned one day strike action at
the EBS Building Society.
Informal talks took place today and the feeling was that there
is scope for a meaningful engagement using the state industrial
relations services.
300 Unite members of staff at the EBS are planning to hold a
second one day strike this Thursday, January 26th. The action is
the next stage of escalating protest at the withholding of a
13th month payment in December. The equivalent payment
for management was paid as normal causing anger and financial
hardship to staff whose average earnings are €30,000 per annum.
“We have agreed to accept an invitation to meet at the Labour
Relations Commission on Thursday and set a deadline of 11am on
Wednesday for the company to do likewise,” said Colm Quinlan,
Regional Officer of Unite.
“If that agreement is forthcoming we will defer Thursday’s
strike action by seven days to allow room for the situation to be
resolved.”
“Should the company not be willing to use the machinery of state
to engage with staff, then the strike will proceed.”
