Morning Star: Welcome to Tory Britain

The main news in most of the papers is the gradual moves towards a eurozone rescue as Merkel and Sarkozy agree to ever closer fiscal union. That opens up a can of worms for Cameron who is now being attacked by the Tory right over his unwillingness to hold a referendum on potential treaty changes. Cameron is also under fire in the Indie after lobbyists boasted how they can help influence the prime minister, for a hefty fee (to the lobbyist not the PM).

Many of the papers also report on poor data from the high street with services slowing and retail suffering. Britain has however achieved the fastest growth in one area in contrast to other countries, sadly it’s the fastest growing income gap with the wealthiest 10 per cent earning 12 times as much as the poorest 10 per cent.

Cameron is also taken to task in the Mirror over deserting Derby and the government’s manufacturing strategy, or lack of one, although the Express trails a possible lifeline. On the transport front Ryanair sees a drop in passengers after grounding flights, Stelios wants to set up an African budget airline and IAG gains from first and business passengers. Elsewhere on the company front Greencore’s deal is off, Rosenfeld will head up the Cadbury side of Kraft when then US business is broken up, shareholders want to keep an eye on bonuses, while more finance workers are sacked. Unite also launched its new community membership scheme which opens up support and services for the unemployed, students and all those not in employment giving people the opportunity to become part of one of the most powerful forces for equality in the country…
