Unite welcomes the decision by Payments Council not to abandon
cheques
13 July 2011
The announcement today (Wednesday 13 July) that the Payments
Council has reversed its decision to scrap cheques is welcome news,
says Unite.
Tony Burke, Unite assistant general secretary, said: “Unite has
worked long and hard to get this decision reversed. It was vital
that the Payments Council understood how crucial it was to retain
cheques as a payment method. Not only to save the jobs of those
Unite members who work with and process cheques, but also to ensure
elderly or vulnerable people still have a safe and secure method
for paying their bills.
“Unite members in the print, IT and finance sectors welcome the
news, but are concerned that UK banks have jumped the gun by
abolishing the cheque guarantee scheme and in the light of the
Payments Council decision this needs to be reviewed.”
