Unite welcomes SSI’s announcement to resume operations in Teesside
12 August 2011
Unite national officer for metals, Paul Reuter, said: “Unite
welcomes the news that SSI is to resume iron and steel operations
on its Teesside site. This will create an additional 1,000 jobs and
will go on to secure a further 500 jobs which is great news for our
members, the community and UK manufacturing.
“This demonstrates what can be achieved by trade unions and
businesses working together as we have been since SSI purchased the
business. We will continue to work closely with SSI to ensure that
it is a success and has a long term future of steel making on
Teesside.
“To ensure the future going forward we call upon the government
to commit to supporting and encouraging manufacturing and to ensure
that the UK is on a level playing field with the rest of the
world.”
Sahaviriya Steel Industries UK has announced it will resume iron
and steelmaking operations on its Teesside site in December 2011.
Under the ownership of Tata Steel, the plant ceased operation in
February 2010. It was subsequently purchased by SSI UK in March
2011.
