Unite tells climate protesters to ‘respect’ mine workers
4th February 2010
Unite, Scotland’s biggest trade union, has asked climate change
protesters to respect the health and safety of its members who are
currently working on the development of the new Mainshill opencast
coal mine, near the village of Douglas in South Lanarkshire.
Unite respects the climate change activists’ right to protest
but the union is becoming concerned over reports of workers at the
site being threatened.
Jim Winter, Unite regional industrial officer, said: “We respect
the rights of the climate change activists to protest peacefully,
equally our members deserve the right to work in an environment
without fear of abuse. It is wrong to target the workers who are
providing for themselves and their families in tough economic times
in an area with few job opportunities.”
