Unite suspends strike action by baggage handlers at Heathrow and
Aberdeen
21st December 2009
Following discussions with SAS Ground Services UK Ltd (SGS) and
Acas over the weekend, Unite the union has agreed to suspend the
strike action proposed for Tuesday 22nd, Wednesday 23rd, Saturday
26th and Sunday 27th December, 2009, plus Sunday 3rd and Monday 4th
January, 2010.
Baggage handlers and check-in staff employed by SGS were to
embark on a series of 48 hour strikes beginning tomorrow morning
(Tuesday), lasting into the new year, in a bid to settle a pay
dispute and prevent the erosion of workers' terms when they are
transferred to a new employer in the new year.
The action is now postponed while Unite reballots its members on
proposals forward during the course of the Acas talks.
Unite is asking its members to attend work as normal on the
dates previously identified as strike days and to fully participate
in the forthcoming ballot, which will be sent out on Tuesday,
December 22nd. The ballot will close on Monday, January 11th,
2010.
The baggage handling and check-in service is provided to
Turkish, Emirates and Thai airlines at London Heathrow and KLM, Air
France, Wideroe and Atlantic at Aberdeen.
