Unite statement following the meeting between Burtons' CEO and the
workforce
1 April 2011
Commenting after the meeting today between workers and the CEO
of Burtons’ biscuits, Ben Clarke, over the future of the plant
employing 342 workers at Moreton, Ritchie James, Unite regional
officer said: "We are pleased to have had this chance to put the
case for the Moreton site. The union’s case for a future for
the plant is a strong one. It has been acknowledged by the
company and it is considering this further.
"We urged the company to give very serious consideration of
these proposals, and it was heartening to have the company confirm
that it is yet to make any decisions on the business direction that
could impact on the Moreton site.
"We have also asked the company to facilitate a meeting between
the owners Apollo Global Management and Canadian Imperial Bank and
the Unite general secretary, Len McCluskey, so that fuller
discussions can take place."
In attendance at the meeting today were Unite's financial team,
Angela Eagle MP and representatives from the plant. The
meeting took place in London with Burtons’ CEO Ben Clarke.
The Moreton factory is the last remaining manufacturer in the
Wirral. It produces Cadbury's chocolate biscuits.
