Unite reaction to 140 job cuts at Barclays
25 August 2011
David Fleming, Unite national officer, said: “The news that the
Barclays corporate function is to cut 140 staff just two months
after 500 people lost their jobs is appalling. Unite finds this
drip feeding of job cuts unacceptable and will be demanding a
meeting with the management of the bank to challenge this
approach.
“Unite cannot accept this scale of job cuts in a profitable and
successful section of the bank and this approach to staff will do
nothing to boost the reputation of the company. We have already
been successful in convincing the bank to reduce the number of
workers being cut and in ensuring that a significant proportion of
the 140 are voluntary redundancies. We will continue to urge the
bank to find suitable alternative roles for all other staff.”
Main areas impacted by this news are: Birmingham, London, Poole
and Reading. The staff being cut are from the infrastructure area
and primarily operations.
