Unite on the HPA’s announcement to relocate
4th February 2010
Unite, the UK’s largest union, has today (4 February) expressed
serious concerns about the Health Protection Agency’s (HPA)
announcement that it intends to move its scientific centre from
Porton Down, Wiltshire to a new site in Essex.
This proposed move would affect the livelihoods of 850 staff at
the site.
Unite regional officer, Dorothy Fogg, said: “Unite is seeking
urgent talks with the Department of Health following the
announcement by Justin McCracken, chief executive officer of the
Health Protection Agency to employees at Porton Down, that their
work will be transferred to a new site in Essex.
“At the meeting we will express the concerns of the workforce
given the devastating impact that this proposed move will have, not
only on their livelihoods but the impact it will have on the local
economy.”
